Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

In case you’ve ever wondered how much time your daughter spends taking selfies, a poll in 2015 found that the average woman between 16 and 25 years old spends over five hours a week. It sounds like a lot unless you’ve tried to take selfies yourself and know what an elaborate process it can be. Women take an average of seven shots to get one image, according to the poll; Kim Kardashian said it takes about 15 to 20. Then there are the filters, not to mention real-life alterations like changing lighting or touching up makeup. There are also apps you can use for more drastic procedures like changing your bone structure, slimming your waistline, erasing pimples, and more.
Selfies can be silly and lighthearted, of course, notes Alexandra Hamlet, a psychologist at the Child Mind Institute. But she also recognizes the darker side, when photos become a measure of self-worth. “With make up, with retouch, with filters, with multiple, multiple attempts, it’s almost like you’re never going to stack up,” says Dr. Hamlet, “And that is where I think it gets dangerous.”
We’re used to worrying about how girls will be affected by seeing too many air-brushed images of models in magazines or movies. But now young people themselves are the models and they’re wielding their own image-editing software. This leads to a lot of self-scrutiny as they try to perfect their own images, and comparisons to the pictures their peers are posting. Experts are understandably worried about what this means for kids’ self-esteem
If you’ve been telling your daughter that she’s beautiful just the way she is, she’s getting a different message when she opens up Snapchat and sees filters and lenses that alter appearances. Pictures used to be final; now we have post-production.
Dr. Hamlet acknowledges that some of the filters are fun and distort in amusing ways, but also points out there’s a so-called “pretty filter” on Instagram and Snapchat. Beautifying filters are used almost reflexively by many, which means that girls are getting used to seeing their peers effectively airbrushed every single day online. There are also image altering apps that teens can download for more substantial changes.
Facetune is one popular one, but there are many, and they can be used to do everything from erase pimples to change the structure of your face or make you look taller. One app called RetouchMe gives your photo a “professional retouch” using a photo editing team for under a dollar. The possibilities can be overwhelming, particularly since girls know they are scrutinized on their appearance — as, of course, they are scrutinizing their peers.
Self-esteem often takes a hit when you start comparing yourself too much to other people, which is something social media seems to be made for. One study found that frequently viewing selfies led to decreased self-esteem and decreased life satisfaction. Another study found that girls who spend more time looking at pictures on Facebook reported higher weight dissatisfaction and self-objectification.
Parents who want to provide a healthy counterbalance to the pressures of social media can start by evaluating how they use social media themselves. Make sure you aren’t talking too much about the pictures you post or see, or ask your children to take too many pictures. The occasional photo is fine, of course, but make a point of prioritizing being in the moment, too. “If you’re taking your kid to a concert, don’t allow them to film the whole thing and see it only through the eyes of the camera,” says Dr. Hamlet. “That’s reinforcing this concept that just being here is not good enough.”

  • Read the passage and answer the questions that follow:- The communicative power of the English language(Solved)

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow:-
The communicative power of the English language
Once it used to be said that "the sun never sets on the British Empire". This meant that the British
Empire covered all the time zones, so that when the sun was setting on one part of the Empire, it
    was rising on another.
The same thing can be said about the English language today. English is spoken as a first language
in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
It is also spoken in the Caribbean countries like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana among
others. In addition to this, English is used as a second language in over fifty countries spread across
Africa and Asia. This means that when you have a good command of English you can enjoy the
writings of people from all over the world, and you can communicate your ideas beyond the
    borders of this continent.
We in East Africa embraced the English language accidentally through the colonial experience.
English came in as a welcome addition to our already rich language situation of over forty local
languages and Kiswahili. In fact the majority of Kenyans today are multilingual. They use at least
three languages: a local language, Kiswahili and English. A good number of others speak a fourth
language which may be either French, Spanish, German, Japanese or Arabic among others.
The local or ethnic language bonds a person to the history, culture and religious traditions of his or
her people. If you speak one of the ethnic languages, for example, you are able to enjoy the songs,
dances, stories, proverbs and riddles in that language. It also helps you to communicate with the
older folks who may not understand English or Kiswahili.
Kiswahili is the national language in Kenya and is used by people from all the ethnic groups. When
one speaks and understands Kiswahili, one can communicate with people from all over Kenya.
Kiswahili is in fact a "regional language", because it is spoken in a number of countries in East and
Central Africa. Lately, Kiswahili was indeed adopted as one of the working languages at African
Union meetings. Kiswahili, therefore, opens opportunities beyond the borders of Kenya.
After Kenya attained independence, English was retained as the official language because it was,
and still is, a great advantage for many of our operations. Though the original speakers of English
were the people living in the British Isles, English is now spoken as a first language in two other
continents, North America and Australia. It is also the second language for millions of people
living all over the world. Therefore, with English you can be
at home anywhere in the world. English provides us with a powerful link to the global village.
Recent developments in modern technology have enhanced our ability to speak, read, write and
understand English well. Many of the computer programmes available, for example, are made to
respond to instruction given in English.
English is also important for participation at the international level. Many reports and records on
recent developments, science and other special research are in English. There is much more written
literature in English than there is in any other language. Therefore, a student who can read and
write English well is at an advantage.
In international news broadcasting, users of English are greatly advantaged. The prominent
international news networks broadcast in English. English thus enjoys a prestigious position in the
communication of events taking place in the world.
For those who want to be part of what is happening in the world, English is a very important tool.
What does this mean for those of us in Africa and Asia, where English is learned mainly in school?
There is need to put a lot of effort in the teaching and learning of this language so that we can be
part of the vast changes taking place in the world today.

    NARRATIVE.
    THE DISOBEDIENT MAN
When Abasi, the supreme God, created human beings, he feared that they might become his equals, and therefore he forbade them to settle on the earth but Atai the wife of the first man decided to defy God’s instructions. The humans were allowed to live on earth, but they were not allowed to procure their own food. They had to eat with Abasi in heaven, and when a bell rang summoning them, they had to come for their meal. They were also forbidden to live together as husband and wife and to beget children because this would make them forget God.
The man obeyed God’s commands, but the woman began to till the soil and she produced her own food. Soon the man found her food sweeter than the food of heaven. Then the man forgot God and he tilled the soil with the woman, and they lived together as a husband and wife.
One day, Abasi asked about the woman, but the man said that she was ill. He had hidden her away because she was pregnant! The woman bore a son and later a daughter. Abasi knew what had happened. Abasi pointed out to Atai that his fears had been justified. The human beings had forgotten him. Abasi said, “They shall never be equals.”
Abasi sent death into the world, and he killed the man and his wife, and he caused discord among their
    children.
