The role man in the ecosystem has continued to cause growing concern to the analysis and explanation of recent and current patterns of biota. While natural factors such as climate, bio- chemical interactions and epeirogenetic for4ces to a large extent determined the distribution and occurrence of living organisms, human activities have to been recognized to greatly influence the impact of these factors on ecosystem through settlements, agriculture and industrialization and have now to a large extent become important in describing and analyzing pattern of distribution of biota. Human activities are associated, mainly with the simplification of organism-environment relationships. A result, there has been and continues to be an overall decrease in diversity and stability of biosphere.
The biosphere is a self-regulating entity with the capacity to keep our planet healthy by controlling the chemical and physical environment. The web of life on which our own life depends is tough and resilient, but once destroyed by human activities (that are intense and frequent), it becomes extremely expensive, perhaps even impossible to restore within the lifetime of man.
Due to technological advancement and increasing numbers of human beings will continue to increase in numbers (or level activity) and sometime, they may have to outpace the earth’s life support system. In the course of such extremes, humanity will have to make major and very painful transition in energy use from fossil fuels to other less certain and probably less lucrative sources. The challenge of the future then will be not how to avoid overshooting, but how to survive it. World population is growing at an unprecedented rate of almost 100 million people every year and human activities are producing major changes in the global environment. If current predictions population prove accurate and patterns of human activity remain unchanged, science mf technology may not be able to prevent either irreversible degradation of the environment or continued poverty of much of the world.
