Discuss moisture as an important component of the ecosystem

- Moisture is vital in the maintenance of many physiological and chemical processes within plants and animals.
- Moisture varies, especially with rainfall patterns, being highest in the zone of high precipitation at equator. -
- Ocean land configuration affects precipitation values: areas far from oceanic moisture are drier than those which are Maritime.
- Biogeographically, what is important is not so much the absolute amount of water, but rather the relationship between the two variables, precipitation and evaporation.
- It is possible to classify ecosystems according to their moisture relations.

Based on climatic conditions, we can identify different plant types, commonly grouped as:
Hydrophytes: plants, which permanent moist, water logged or even aquatic conditions.

Xerophytes: plants adapted to very dry conditions (characteristics of xerophytes cactus, euphorbia, prickly pear, reduction in leaf size, rolled or folded leaves to reduce surface area, hence evaporation emphasis on growth below ground)

Mesophytes: plant species, which are found, on sites with moderate soil moisture; levels.

Trophophytes: refer to plants that use different physical and/or chemicals tactics to avoid drought - e.g. long roots

Atmospheric effects such as wind affect moisture differently. For instance, transpiration in plants is influenced by wind. In response, plants have adapted different morphological adaptations due to cope with the effects of wind.
