Discuss the major human disturbances to the ecological systems in East Africa

Human disturbances are caused by:
a) Partially or totally destroying or replacing either the natural plant cover.
b) Introducing new (alien or exotic) species of plants.
c) Altering on or more environmental factors.
d) Or adding foreign substances to the ecosystem such as pollutants or pesticides.

These disturbances can be interrelated for example: clearing of forest for crop production not only means removal of the natural vegetation, but it also profoundly alters the native animal population, the local micro-climate and the soil types. Use of pesticides to control weeds for example usually interferes with the recolonisation of plant.

- Disturbances can have devastating consequences, often in the most unexpected ways. Indirect influences, resulting from the introduction, may pose as many problems as the direct or obvious changes.
- We know little about these complex interrelationships in nature between animals or between plants and animals. We know even less about human beings part in influencing these relationships.
