Photogrammetric survey is the science and art of obtaining reliable measurement by means of photographs. In mapping, measurements on photographs replace field surveys, hence the term aerial survey or photogrammetric survey. Aerial survey is topographic work. Topographic mapping and other projects such as production of maps for civil engineering or cadastral survey require that the location of features and elevation of the land be accurately determined. When photogrammetry is used for such tasks, it is necessary to use instruments capable of removing geometric errors in the aerial photographs.
These instruments are known as stereo floaters. Overlapping parts of photographs are observed and interpreted in stereoscopic viewing device which gives a three dimensional view and creates the illusion that the observer is viewing a relief model of the terrain. The main errors associated with aerial photos are tilt and relief.
