According to Ellis (1994:54) the description of learner errors involves a comparison of the learner’s idiosyncratic utterances with a reconstruction of those utterances in the TL.” This is often accompanied with the classification of the errors identified. Several taxonomies for classification of errors have been proposed by various researchers. Let’s look at the following taxonomy proposed by Dulay Burt and Krashen (1982).

Having classified errors into various categories, the analyst may then go on to quantify them to determine which errors are most frequent and therefore most in need of attention.
