Give the relevance of the Typological Universals in SLL studies

First, the notion of absolute universals is relevant in SLL research. The assumption here is that there are certain linguistic features that are common to all natural languages. Consequently, many SLL studies have suggested that whatever universals hold true for natural languages would hold true for ILs. Put differently, SLL scholars argue that the IL should not contain structures that violate linguistic universals. Thus, learners for instance will have nouns and verbs in their IL as no language lacks these grammatical categories.
