Nativization is a second theory that tries to incorporate non – linguistic factors in its explanations. The nativization model is the brain child of Anderson (1983).It consists of two general processes: nativization and denativization.

1. Nativization
It is characterized by assimilation. Learners try to make the input conform to their own internalized view of what constitutes the L2 system. That is they simplify the learning task by forming hypothesis based on knowledge that they already possess (LI knowledge and knowledge of the world). In the early stages of acquisition, learners will create a linguistic system which is at least partly automatic from the input used from building that system. The system can be considered “native” to the individual’s mental capacity. To construct such a linguistic system makes it possible for a new native language to arise. A good example of nativization is pidgitization.

2. Denativization
It is the opposite of nativization. It involves accommodation to the external system. During this process, the learner adjusts his internalized system to make it fit with the input. The learner uses inferencing strategies to reshape his inter language according to an external norm.
“When circumstances cause the learner to reconstruct his IL to conform more closely to that of the input, he must in effect dismantle the parts of his ‘native’ system (the system that he constructed previously or that he is in the process of constructing). Thus later stages of first and second language acquisition constitute types of denativization.
Creolization is an example of denativization
Nativization and denativization are used in Anderson’s model to capture the different directions the learner takes in building the IL. In nativization process there’s growth independent of external norm that is thought to be consistent with natural acquisition processes while the denativization process involves growth towards external norm as pressure to conform to the TL cause learners to over-ride natural acquistional processes.
