The Somali community is subdivided into six major clusters of patrilineal clans usually labeled as clanfamilies,that are internally segmented.
For most purpose the largest social unit is a clan which is made up of members between a thousand and a hundred thousand members.
Members of the clan are not permitted to intermarry.
The are some scattered Somali groups to the north known as the sab. The southern Somali are somehow in large groups compared to those of the north.
A member from a different clan can be adopted and given full membership of the Somali community.
The Somali of the south have leadership that is different from that of the whole Somalis.
