Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.
As he grew up at Sironga village in the current Nyamira district, Daniel Abuga Nyatigo
admired soldiers in uniform as they drove by in Land-Rovers. Yet, when he came of age and
made an attempt to join the Kenya Army, the recruiting officers rejected him five times
"1 had lost hope until a friend advised me to join the National Youth Service, learn a trade and
join the Army as a specialist," he says He joined the army after training as a plant operator at the
NYS.
Today, 32 years after he joined the army, the man affectionately referred to by his younger
colleagues as "Babu" and "Sokoro" (Kisii for elder), is among the Kenya Defence Forces in
Somalia.
His dream has, in a sense, been accomplished. He is a Senior Sergeant, but fate has also
conspired to have his son, Senior Private Wycliffe Abuga, 30, also deployed to the front line in
the war against Al-Shabaab
Snr Sgt Abuga is based at the KDF patrol base at Tabda, about 70 kilometers in Somalia, while
his son is at Beles Qoogani, 35 kilometers further.
Some describe the military as a national insurance scheme in which the annual budgetary
allocations are the equivalent of premiums, and the eventualities for which they are deployed the
accidents insurers compensate .for If that be the case, it is time for the soldiers in Operation
Linda Nchi to pay back for the years of training and pay that led to the derisive description of the
Kenyan Defense Forces as a career army.
Lieutenant-Colonel Jeff Nyagah, the commander of the KDF troops in the Central Sector,
estimates that 70 per cent of the soldiers currently in Somalia have been involved in combat.
Snr Sgt Abuga, who supervises the drivers on the Armored Personnel Carriers at Tabda, has had
his fair share of fighting since Operation Linda Nchi began in mid - October 2011.
The asymmetrical nature of the operation means there are no frontages and, with Al-Shabaab
using guerrilla tactics, there have been no shortage of encounters and opportunities for KDF to
test their weaponry and skills
Snr Sgt Abuga says he has been involved in 11 attacks since the operation started, the bulk of
them ambushes on the Puma APCs that are arguably the safest vehicles in the fleet.
Al-Shabaab are said to refer to the sturdy armor-clad machines as "the graves from which people
rise" and Snr Sgt Abuga was in one when they rained rocket-propelled grenades on the
windscreen.
"If you sit in one of these vehicles and come under an attack, it sounds like it is raining. You
shouldn't be worried," he says as he points out the openings through which the soldiers shoot.
He says he was with his son in convoy when they came under attack from Al-Shabaab in an
ambush. Interestingly, Snr Sgt Abuga and his son were among the first to undergo training on
driving, servicing and maintaining the new APCs when they were delivered in September 2011.
Sgt Abuga is based at Kahawa Barracks while his son is with the Nanyuki-based First Kenya
Rifles Battalion.
Now they keep in touch on the Hormund Telecom mobile phone network, which somehow
operates in the infamously lawless state and is a useful communication channel with those back
home.
Does he worry that either he or his son could be hit in one of the attacks?
"Kifo cha nyani kikifika, miti yote huteleza," he says, using the Swahili proverb that suggests
each man is born with his destiny, and there is no avoiding death.
For Snr Sgt Abuga and other soldiers in Somalia, spending the nights and a good part of the day
in trenches is normal, and nobody seems to mind the dust.
"I'm happy to have fought here," he says as we look at his reinforced trench, which he has been
converting into a bunker of sorts, immune to mortars and RPGs.
He does not foresee a longer future in the army once Operation Linda Nchi is over - whenever
that may be - but hopes for a promotion to the next rank, Warrant Officer 11, before he retires.
"If I get a little more pension and I'm able to buy myself a small pick-up, buy a few cattle and
work on my farm, I'll be one happy senior sergeant," he says. Sgt Abuga was in a convoy last
Tuesday that unearthed significantly large improvised explosive devices (IEDs) about 12
kilometers away from Tabda towards Beles Qoogani.
Al-Shabaab attempted to stage an ambush on the convoy but were repulsed by a combination of
the Transitional Federal Government soldiers and the Kenyan troops.
The Abugas were happy to be reunited, if only for a short while. Although they are a generation
apart -the son speaks Sheng, showing a silver tooth while the father speaks Kiswahili with a
thick Kisii accent-their resemblance is obvious. The son, who is also a father of one, foresees a
long future serving in the army.
Snr Sgt Abuga might not have his pick-up, cows and farm yet, but he appears to be one happy
senior sergeant.

Read the following excerpt and answer the questions that follow
“Yes, Papaai,” Resian said apprehensively. “I am here. Taiyo tells me you are calling me?”
“Yes, yes,” her father replied. “Please take a seat.”
“Yes, Papaai,” Resian repeated as she sat on a chair far away from her father.
“Come nearer…child,” her father said pleasantly.
“Why do you sit a mile away? Come nearer.”
Resian moved her chair hardly an inch from where it was and then she looked up into her father’s face with eager expectation.
“If I do remember well,” her father began in a low even tone, “you will be nineteen in September this year, am I right”
“You are quite right, Papaai.” Resian answered eyeing him curiously. His face was unusually kind. His eyes held hers as he smiled broadly. That’s it!’ she thought triumphantly. “That must be it!
“You and I have not discussed important issues for a long time,” he said with a friendly chuckle that was intended to bring her closer to him. “I thought today would be the best day to break the news. Your future is very important to me, my dear child.”
Resian thought the concern in her father’s voice, rang false. She hesitated, but could not hold herself any more. The anxiety was too great.
“Papaai, is it Yeiyo or Taiyo who spoke to you?” she asked sensationally, thinking she was stating the obvious. But seeing her father’s face cloud, she added quickly.
“Who between them spoke to you about our enrolment at the Egerton University?”
“What are you talking about, child? Her father, who seemed dumbfounded, asked after a long and uncomfortable silence.
“Both Yeiyo and Taiyo promised to talk to you about it, and I thought she had.”
“What, in the name of God are you talking about, child?” he repeated, this time agitated and shaking his head vigorously. “No, I have never spoken to anybody about any of you enrolling at the university. Never! When I said I wanted us to discuss your future, that isn’t what I meant at all. Of course not!”Resian looked at her father’s face enquiringly.

Read the following passage and then answer the questions that follow.
The question is at least as old as Socrates: If we know what the right thing to do is, why do we not do it? It is an especially acute question when applied to global warming. The science showing that carbon dioxide emissions are already changing the planet’s climate, and are likely to have severe effects (melting ice caps, sea-level rise, and species extinction), is compelling and now barely disputed. Almost 90% of Europeans say they recognize climate change as a major issue, and 75% identify fossil fuel emissions as a major cause.
And yet, as was widely discussed at a conference of environmentalists, geologists and writers in May 2006 in Ankelohe, Germany, public understanding has not translated into even the simplest of public actions. Less than 1% of Britons, for example, have switched their home electricity to renewable sources, even though it requires little more than a phone call to one’s existing provider. Proportions on the continent are slightly higher, but there is clearly no rush to go green or — shudder — stop driving cars.
Why such a disconnect between information and action? Part of the problem is that environmental advocates emit mixed messages. In mid-May 2006, Britain’s Guardian published a front-page story showing that five companies in Britain produce more CO2 pollution in a year than all the country’s motorists combined. That is a strong argument for targeting industries, but the average reader could hardly be blamed for thinking, “Why should I bother to cut down my driving?”
Similarly, not enough thought has been devoted to the best role for government. Climate change is too vast a problem for individuals to solve alone, and some big businesses have an incentive not to solve it. That leaves government to take the lead, which is tricky, because over-reliance on government can allow individuals to fob off their own responsibilities. What is worse, government power seems to tickle autocratic fantasies. In my experience, environmentalists spend far too much energy advocating hard-line government ‘solutions’ that do not stand a chance of being enacted. Sure, it might be good for the planet if governments banned the use of sports-utility vehicles or, for that matter, of all fossil fuels. Yet not only is it hard to sell outright prohibitions to voters, but the sad truth is that governments have a woeful record in even the mildest interventions. One of the most Significant innovations in the last decade has been Europe’s carbon-emission trading scheme: some 12 000 companies, responsible for more than half of the EU’s emissions, have been assigned quotas. Companies with unused allowances can sell them; the higher the price, the greater the incentive for firms to cut their use of fossil fuels. The system seemed to work for about a year — but now it turns out that Europe’s governments allocated far too many credits, which will likely hinder the program’s effectiveness for years.
Perhaps the real reason that well-intentioned consumers do not change is that they do not see any benefit. Climate change may be a frightening, irreversible calamity, but its worst effects will not be felt next week or next year. The planet looks the same regardless of whether we use environmentally friendly technology or we do not care how much CO2 we emit. But sure as the sun rises and sets every day, if we do not cut down on carbon emissions, then we may not have a planet to hand over to the next generation.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow
Substance Abuse has emerged in recent decades as a major concern both on and off the job. Although reasons
vary, substance abuse can be a way that some people try to manage or reduce distress.
But it is important to be clear on what is generally meant by a drinking problem. In all cases related to alcohol
abuse, a common factor is the unfavorable effect alcohol has on the health or well-being of the drinker and his
or her associates. Common signs and symptoms that frequently indicate a drinking problem include being
constantly absent from work, causing on-the-job accidents and expressing grievances most of the time.
Alcoholic employees can sometimes go undetected for years. Coworkers cover up for those unable to perform
their jobs because of drunkenness. Even managers may be adept at concealing their alcohol abuse problems.
Their secretaries or loyal associates may cover up for them.
Alcoholics can be clever at inventing “credible” excuses when detected: “I must have a drink or two when I’m
entertaining customers, of course.”
Drug abuse, or drug addiction, exists when the taking of drugs, whether prescribed or non-prescribed, legal or
illegal, causes difficulties in any area of an individual’s life. Years ago, the stereotype of the drug user was
either of a glazed-eyed musician frantically beating his sticks on a tight skin or a person who dwelt in a slum.
Mass publicity on drug abuse has long since caused that stereotype to fade from view.
Complicating the ongoing war on drugs are changes in public attitude and drug-use patterns. It sometimes
seems that no sooner is progress made in combating one illegal drug than a different kind of substance abuse
comes into vogue. Ethyl alcohol was the social drug during prohibition (1920-1933), marijuana became the
social drug of the 1960s and 1970s and some observers believe that crack cocaine and possibly ecstasy –
another so-called upper – became the social drugs of the 1980s and 1990s. The drug of choice and people’s
attitude toward them may change, but the problem of drug abuse appears to be continuing unabated.
Pinpointing the specific symptom of alcohol and drug abuse problems is not a simple task. A supervisor’s main
responsibility therefore should not necessarily be uncovering evidence of dependency on alcohol and drugs but
instead being observant for declining job performance. Yet there are certain behavioral patterns that some
excessive users of alcohol and drugs display. These patterns can sometimes be spotted through simple
observation. Increasingly though, employers are taking more aggressive steps to ferret out substance abuse
among their workforces. A growing number of companies, especially large ones with many employees and
those in business with potential to effect public health or safety, are adopting drug-testing programmes.
The signs of alcohol dependency, unfortunately, do not always become manifest until the middle of the late
stages of the problem. No wonder some managers have mistaken an employee’s euphoric appearance for the
“look of love”. The earlier treatment begins, naturally, the earlier treatment begins, naturally, the easier it will
be. A person could experience some isolated incidents of such drinking problems without necessarily being a
alcoholic, however, alcohol abuse usually results in declining job performance.
Because there are many symptoms of drug abuse, no one person would exhibit all of them and a supervisor
should guard against assuming that the presence of one or more symptoms is conclusive of alcohol or drug
abuse.

`THE TORTOISE AND THE ELEPHANT’(Solved)
Read the narrative below and answer the following questions
`THE TORTOISE AND THE ELEPHANT’
Along time ago, the tortoise would cheat the elephant until the elephant was
tired of being cheated, the tortoise thought out once more what he would do
to the elephant.
Early one morning, the tortoise went to the home of the elephant. When he
got there he asked the elephant to go out for a walk with him, and both of
them went off to the forest. When they got to the forest, the tortoise said to
the elephant, `elephant, I have a good idea;; ``What idea tortoise?’’ asked
the elephant? ``I think we should have a riddle contest. You first ‘’, said the
tortoise. The elephant posed the first riddle and said, ``my house has no door
and no window, what is it? ``The tortoise said. ``An egg.’’ The tortoise said,
``A large bird sings a small bird steals. ``The elephant tried to think of the
answer until he nearly went out of his mind and then said, `` I cannot solve
it’’
The tortoise said, ``come, let us go, and I will tell you the solution. But this
riddle requires that a person should eat plenty of honey first, and I know
where we can get such honey’’
So the elephant followed the tortoise until they came to where the honey
was. They went to the bee hive and the tortoise said to the elephant. ``Put
your trunk into the hive and get some honey for us to eat’’ The elephant put
his trunk into the hive, and started to scoop as much honey as he could..
The tortoise waited anxiously. The elephant removed his trunk and gave all
the honey to the tortoise. The tortoise started eating the honey hungrily. He
said to the elephant, ``the honey is so sweet but this will not be enough for
both of us. Put the trunk in the hive once more and scoop some more
honey.’’ The elephant obeyed and put his trunk into the hive and started to
scoop some more honey.
Before he could remove his trunk, the hive slipped and trapped the
elephant’s trunk. He cried out to tortoise, saying, ``please help me. I am
going to die here?’’ Put the tortoise laughed and refused to help him remove
his trunk.
Meanwhile, the bees inside the hive were disturbed and stung the elephant
furiously. The elephant was stung until he died as the tortoise walked away.
The tortoise is very cunning.

Albinism is a group of inherited conditions in human, animals and plants

Read the passage below and then answer questions that follow.
Albinism is a group of inherited conditions in human, animals and plants
characterized by hypo pigmentation. The lack of pigmentation creates the
comparative lightness of skin, eyes and hair colour most commonly
associated with albinism. What is less known, and perhaps of more
importance is that all types of albinism are associated with eye disorders,
including nystagmus (rapid involuntary horizontal eye movement),
squinting, sensitivity to light and glare and reduced visual acuity.
Albinism affects all, regardless of their race and gather, although some subtypes of albinism are more prevalent among certain groups. The term albinism. Which uses the condition to be a dehumanizing term and is
discouraged in favour of the term``person with albinism’’ or even ``
albinism person’’
Albinism is perhaps one of the most misunderstood conditions in the world.
Researchers who have surveyed adolescent attitudes and beliefs towards the
condition have found them to be negative. Some said that persons with
albinism are biracial, they are mentally retarded and they have a contagious
disease.
These unfortunate misconceptions are not limited to the youth but are
represented in much of the general public. The general public’s perception of
albinism is further obscured by the gross misrepresentation of the condition
in movies. For example, a recent major motion picture release called powder
feature a character whose mother was struck by lightning, causing him to be
born with albinism and supernatural powers. Even traditional sources of
reference are not immune to misinformation. Webster defines albinism as
simply ``the condition of being an albino.’’ It goes on to define albino ``as a
person whose skin, hair and eyes lack normal colouration because of genetic
factors. Albinos have white skin, whitish hair and pink eyes.’’ The definition
is a popular misconception about albinism. In fact, many people with
albinism go unrecognized as such by others, and indeed, sometimes even by
themselves.
Albinism is an autosomal (non-sex related chromosome) recessive genetone
disorder requiring both parents to carry the defective gene in order for their
children to have albinism. There is, however, a rare type of X- linked
albinism and unusual autosomal form.
People with albinism have the same life expectancy, similar variation in
intelligence and the same general health problems as the rest of the
population.
Although the visual problems are severe, the social and emotional
ramifications may affect individuals more.
With proper preventive methods and an awareness of the dangers of sun
exposure, skin care is not a problem. By applying sunscreen, wearing hats
and wearing opaque clothes when appropriate, people with albinism may
engage in the same outdoor activities as fully pigmented people.
Questions
a. Explain what causes the features most commonly associated with
albinism.
b. What types of eye disorders are associated with albinism?
c. In note form, summarize adolescents’ mistaken beliefs about albinism.
d. What hazes the people’s understanding of albinism?

Read the conversation below between a mother and her twelve-year-old step-son.
Mother: Hey you good for nothing boy. Come here quickly.
boy: (panting hurriedly) Mum, here I am. Please tell me what you would
like me to do.
Mother: use your head young man! Can’t you ever think? Must I be the one to
always tell you what to do?
Boy: please mummy, I was just cleaning the house and then planning to
tend the flower garden.
Mother: you mean you’ve been cleaning the house for hours without end?
Lazy bone! I think all you deserve is a thorough beating.
Boy: please forgive me. I always try my best but I never seem to please
you.
Mother: so you know! Do you now call me a cruel master, a hard to please
master?
Boy: (kneeling) I’m sorry mum but that is not what I meant.
Mother: now go back to your work and stop calling me mum mum
