The world today had become so competitive in the job market. Due to this, people prefer to add additional related courses to the main course that they are doing in order for them to be competitive in the job market. You'll see electrical engineers enrolling in part time courses such as CISCO, business students enrolling in CPA and Information Science students enrolling in computer courses.

Each degree course can be accompanied by a supporting course in order to have something extra than fellow graduates. The number of students in higher learning institutions has risen drastically making it comparatively difficult for them to acquire a job after they have graduated. You see, some are in the comfort zone when they see themselves pursuing a degree course. What they don't know is that all their colleagues in class would graduate with the same degree. Also, other institutions would produce the same graduates.

What then happens if all of them go to the same company to look for a job? Ever heard of the engineer who beat his colleagues to acquire a job just because he possessed a driving license? Yes. The driving license was the one which made this person more qualified than the others. Now tell me, what if one of them had pursued an extra course related to his main field of study?

How does one choose a related short course to back up his main course?

You are in a better position to do so than I am. See, a person pursuing engineering doesn't necessarily know which other course can fit a law student, and vice versa. But a law student can know which part time course he can pursue while at the same time majoring in his main field.

How do you

do it then?

By research and consultations. You can consult your lecturers and professionals from your field to find out which course can go hand in hand with your main course. Also, intensive research can be done on the internet as it is a source of a wide variety of information.

Do I really have the time to pursue two courses?

It all depends on your time management and planning. An accompanying course is done mainly on a part time basis. By this, it means that it can either be done as an evening class or done during the holidays. Usually it is manageable so long as you plan your time well. Take for instance the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) course; many people have managed to do it as a part time course. From engineers to art students, we see this course being pursued. This means that part time courses can be managed regardless of the main course you are pursuing; so long as you have interest, passion, determination and proper planning.

Does it cost a lot?

Some students may say that fees is limiting factor that prevents them from pursuing an additional accompanying course. However, these courses are mainly certificate courses. They do not cost as much as one enrolling in a degree course. More so, the benefits that accrue will be well appreciated and the cost would seem like nothing of a big deal.

So how many accompanying courses can I pursue at a time?

Our brain has its limits and its not advisable at all to reach this limit. One accompanying course is enough when you are still pursuing your main course. If you see yourself not managing an accompanying course, then its better to leave it alone. Better you succeed in one than fail in both! Don't push your limits too far.

Can I pursue an accompanying course that is not related to my main course?

It all depends in your interest. For example, you may be pursuing a bachelors degree in law yet you have interest in web design. Its not bad to fulfill your interest and pursue the web design course as you'll enjoy and easily understand it. Furthermore, in the job market, you may be able to do two jobs, one part time, one full time.

All said, there are some courses which are considered universal and one can do them regardless of the main course they are pursuing. Such include management and leadership skills, computer basics and even in Kenya today, CPA.

Finally, here is a thing to note: additional courses are mainly certificate courses.
