Mention CPA anywhere in Kenya and you are bound to get a number of people pursuing this course. In fact, the number of people enrolled in CPA are just about enough to elect the president! For some, CPA is their main course while for a good number of others, its a part time course. What has seen the increased enrollment in this course is the change in one of the rules governing failure in a particular subject in a section.

A while back, one had to re-do the whole section but today, one only does the subject they have failed in. The CPA course is divided into three parts of two sections each. Each section consists of three subjects. The exams are usually held in June and December. KASNEB has made it convenient to sit for these exams as you are able to chose your venue depending on the place you are.

Most students, as mentioned earlier, pursue CPA as a part time course. Some work and go for evening classes. Some study another course and pursue CPA as a second option. However, there are some who pursue CPA as their main course, many of those lying in this group being form four graduates.

The grading of the CPA results is favorable to all as it doesn't have different levels of passing the exam. If you have passed, then you are given a pass, not considering if you have 100 or 60 marks. If you have failed, well this is the only thing you can be given, no matter what the course is. As the syllabus for CPA has all the requirements for one to be a certified public accountant, not all graduates are certified. You see, some don't even enroll in colleges, they

only pay for the KASNEB examination fees and wait until the last minute to start studying for the exam.

It is common also to find students with huge past paper revision questions and they actually revise rather than study. There have also been mentions by some students that, at one time or another, questions which are not in the syllabus are set. This then begs the question, will each student be given some marks for just attempting the question, not necessarily caring if the answer is right or wrong?

Apart from the issue of examinations, what is bothering all the courses in higher learning institutions is the don't care attitude by some students. Students who are pursuing the CPA course and have enrolled in colleges are given assignments from time to time. Some of these students find other persons who have completed or are at a higher level of CPA to do the assignments for them. They don't necessarily care if they do or do not understand the question eventually.

A thing that is also eminent among some CPA students is that they just pursue the course to get the certificate and be qualified to be employed. In the end, they may get the employment, since they may have also perfected in the art of interviews, but cannot perform. They just have to be trained all over again, from the start or not necessarily from the start. Some even end up being sacked, even with their CPA (K) certificates.

The course doesn't have industrial training for those who are pursuing it as the main course and thus when they get employed is when they will first experience the job market. Despite some students not taking the CPA course seriously, there are some who want to be real professional Certified Public Accountants. We should be like such and be role models to others.
