We cannot deny the fact that theft cases are rampant in the universities. Almost all sorts of belongings can be stolen including clothes, shoes, utensils but the most common stolen things are electronic gadgets.
This is mainly because they have more value than other things. Besides, they have a lot of market. With the introduction of online classifieds sites, there has been an easy method for people to sell things.

You never know! Where does one user get all the laptops that he sells? Also, stickers and posters in campus most of the times are of advertisement of second hand laptops, phones, flash disks and memory cards. This is not to say that all second hand electronic gadgets sold in campus are stolen, but to say a good number of them indeed are.
Carelessness on the part of some students is a contributing factor for their things to be stolen. Things such as leaving the door open and exposing all your stuff, inviting a lot of people in your room some of whom you don't know and sleeping without closing the door with a lock are some of these contributing factors.
Also, why leave your clothes outside overnight? Other cases of stealing are unavoidable and unexpected. For instance, the breaking in of one's room.

Despite all these, there are some steps that you can take to ensure safety of your stuff.
Some of these steps are:

1. Ensure that you buy a genuine padlock. We all agree that padlocks that are sold in the streets are comparatively cheaper but are they safe? Some of these padlocks are as fake as counterfeit phones. They appear as strong yet they have a lot of vulnerabilities. Some may open themselves unexpectedly while some may be opened with more than one key. You better buy something

that is a little bit expensive but one of quality or else you'll just end up realizing that indeed cheap is expensive.

2. Install tracking devices on your laptops. Laptops are among the most common gadgets that are stolen in campus. Not only in campus, but also to the outside world. That is why companies that offer tracking services have been on the increase. It isn't that expensive to insert a tracking device on your laptop. In the end, it will assist you in finding your lost laptop or other gadgets. It will also assist in minimizing theft cases since when one person is caught, its a step forward in reducing theft.

3. While in the room, don't leave your door wide open to show off your stuff. You never know what people's intentions are when they peep in your room. Some may just be surveying and eye that expensive thing that you have exposed to them. They may then find the opportune moment to come and steal from you. Their work would be much more easier since they already know what they want and where it is. Thus, chances of them being caught are reduced as they will be fast.

4. While sleeping, lock the door. Some people assume that thieves cannot enter the room while they are in. You may be wrong. Some people are just "deep sleepers" and can't perceive anything happening in the real world while they are asleep. If these kind of people leave their doors open, then they may be out for surprise. Thieves may enter, pick whatever they want and quietly leave. Why risk? Lock the door and be safe.

5. Don't leave your clothes to stay outside overnight. Once a friend was deeply depressed as all his clothes were stolen from the hang lines. The mistake was partly his as he left the clothes outside overnight. The thief thus got an easy get through as nobody was out to spot late in the night. Even if your clothes are not fully dried, you can put them in a bucket to hang them back early in the morning.

6. Don't leave shoes outside the door. Nowadays we even have designer shoes. Among campus students, shoes are among the most treasured belongings, especially for male students. It seems the belief that ladies judge men partly by looking at the kind of shoes worn is after all true to some extent. Most shoes spotted are quite expensive as a good number of male students wear shoes of not less than 500 shillings. If you are inside the room, even if you have a carpet, find a place to keep your shoes lest you offer an easy opportunity for a thief to go away with them.

7. Don't let people crowd in your room. The intentions of some people is not well known. Some visitors may pretend to be doing something which they aren't technically doing. On one hand, they may be pretending to watch a movie but in reality, they are eyeing that 32 GB flash disk. If the room is crowded, chances are that this person may succeed in going away with the flash disk. At times, we cannot control this situation hence it is advisable that you put the small stuffs in a safe place as they are the most vulnerable.

8. Lock all your important stuff in the wardrobe. Locking belongings in the wardrobe ensures that if someone is out to steal, they will have a hard time opening both the door and the wardrobe and in the end may be caught.

9. While partying, don't carry expensive gadgets like smartphones. Chances are that when a thief sees you with an expensive gadget in events such as parties, they will do their best to try to get it. That may use your vulnerability when you are drunk, pick pocket you or use other methods to steal it from you.

10. Always ensure that you keep your key in a safe place. Keep your key safe as a person may use it to illegally enter your room. When found by some people who know where you live, they may duplicate it and pretend to be good Samaritans and return it to you. The room will thus have an extra roommate only coming when there is nobody in the room. Keeping your key safe ensures that such mishaps don't happen.

11. Report theft cases as soon as they happen. If your things happen to be stolen, it is better you report them sooner rather than waiting. This will ensure that investigations start early and that your things may be recovered before they reach far places.
