How to recover after telling a bad joke

Being funny is a great quality in human beings. Making people laugh is a gift only a few get to enjoy. But also the funniest person in the world has those cricket moments. This is because not all jokes can be funny. The awkward moment that follows may be accompanied by insults by the audience is what most people dread. Recovery is most important especially if you are a stand up comedian with a tough crowd. But the disaster doesn't matter it is the recovery that defines you.

How do you deal with your audience after telling a bad joke?
1. Do not blame the audience for not laughing at the joke. To you the joke may be out of this world but to the audience; they do not like it. Do not say that they are the problem because they will turn on you and leave you talking to yourself.
2. Try to save the situation by making a joke about the joke. Be disgusted with the audience and make fun of your bad joke. This will save the moment and your dignity.
3. Don’t explain the joke. The chances of making a joke funny after explaining are slimmer than my wallet. You will be making fool of yourself for trying to explain the joke. It is simple; Do not explain.
4. Move on swiftly by changing the topic or keep talking. If you do not pause you will not give the audience a chance to think about your joke. As a reward to you it will not make such a big deal of that moment and people will just let it go as long as you redeem yourself with a better joke next.
5. Don’t repeat the joke. You assume that by the deafening silence after your joke

that the people did not hear you but they did. Repeating it is like stamping it into their memory and making a bigger fool of yourself. So do not repeat if you want to keep your dignity.
6. Take a note of that moment. Do not ever say something like that in public again. Learn from your mistake. Take that as a learning lesson and know which recovery method is most effective.
Make people laugh; it is the best gift to give to anyone. Remember it is important to make people laugh with you; not at you.
