The KASNEB CPA is the most widely taken exam in Kenya. Anyone who has taken it however will tell you that it is no walk in the park for anyone. The exam is also not for the fainthearted as sometimes a student fails a paper or two or even three. The KASNEB CPA exam is divided into three parts of two sections each making a total of six sections. Each section additionally has three papers or subjects taken by students in Kenya. To become an accountant, a student must pass all six sections. A student must pass a section within five exam sittings failure to which they cannot be allowed to take the exam anymore. It is therefore imperative that a student of KASNEB CPA prepares well for these exams. It is also advisable for a KASNEB student to pass the exams the first time as they are costly and time consuming.

Anyone who wishes to pass the CPA exam must start preparing early. KASNEB gives a period of six months between exam sittings and it is for no reason. The CPA exam is not one where you can study hurriedly and pass, the earlier one starts the better. A student needs to understand the concepts in the subjects offered and the CPA syllabus is quite wide and intensive. Giving yourself enough time to cover the syllabus will go a step to ensuring your success in the CPA exam.

KASNEB provides every registered student with a guidebook containing the syllabus and what is expected to be covered. A student should allocate time to each topic over the course of the study to ensure they cover the full syllabus. It would also help in noting one’s areas of weakness so as to allocate them more time when studying and revising. Allocating

specific time to each topic will help to reduce time wastage and confusion while studying.

Revising with KASNEB past papers will help a student to get a feel of the exams. It can also help in identifying the most set topics in exams so as to concentrate on them when revising. It is almost impossible to pass the KASNEB CPA exam without revising with actual past papers. The past papers can be easily obtained from any KASNEB exam centre or from KASNEB offices in NAIROBI at a cost of 150 Kenya shillings per set.

Finally, a KASNEB CPA student needs to be dedicated and determined. You should not give up when you fail a paper in a sitting or two. KASNEB gives a minimum of five sittings for a reason so go ahead and take advantage of that. The roots may not be appealing but when you have passed and are a qualified accountant, and then it will be appealing.
