Years back Kenya joined the global digital migration as required by Geneva agreement 2000. To Kenya this would lead great expansion to media industry since digital broadcasting had numerous advantages over analogue broadcasting. However the conduct of migration as carried out by the CA caused a great worry to any concerned Kenyans. It have turned out to be an opportunity from some greedy people to benefit from it.

So what is digital broadcasting? To me there no much difference in the signal transmission because in both analogue and digital information is usually carried in electromagnetic waves (radio waves). Its only that in analogue transmission the antennas translate the information by understanding the analogy of waves while in digital platform the information is translated using a coded language inform of 1s and 0s.

My only worry however is the migration itself. Remember Kenya has been in analogue transmission which means broadcasting media used to transmit their signals directly to the viewers. In digital platform however this had to change , another industry had to be introduced to the media market as the content provider. So all the media had to do was was to produce the content and leave the rest to the new industry.

Now this is where the issues began , Kenya did not have a single content provider company. This was a virgin industry that was being set up in the country. Of course any person with potential had an interest to invest in this business. Then the issue of issuing license after unclear tendering system came up. CA only gave two companies licenses Signet owned by KBC and pang which is 100% Chinese. Local medias tried to protest only to be given a very insufficient response that they not have the ability leave alone

having in the market for about 15 years. Any sane person would have thought that local industries would be at least considered. This however means that PANG have the monopoly power now since their only potential competitor is Signet which is owned by very poor performing KBC. But the big question still remains , did the three medias which have shown great performance for more than ten years lack the ability to do the same in world?. This only means and shows how far Kenyans are from enjoying from fruits of new industries in the market.
