Doctors, clinical officers and any medical professionals are always urging us to drink at least eight glasses of water every day. These medical specialists are at the forefront of pushing for this campaign because they clearly understand the health benefits of water. The body is made of 70% water and therefore for the body to function properly it requires water. Water has numerous benefits in the human body, some of which are discussed below. Our bodies accumulate toxins from the food and drinks we ingest. These toxins are present in our blood in which they are transported to the kidney where they are eliminated. The kidneys also process water-soluble toxins from the liver. The kidneys require water to eliminate these toxins through urination and sweat. Insufficient intake of water causes the kidney to have insufficient fluid to work with hence toxins are accumulated in the body instead of being eliminated. Water is, therefore, instrumental in the flushing out of the toxins from the body. Most people take water after every meal. To most of us this is just a habit that we have developed over time since in our childhood years our parents always insisted on us taking a glass of water after every meal. What most of us don’t know is the fact that water is important in the process of digestion of food. Water is crucial in the breakdown of food and moistening the alimentary canal where digestion of food takes place. Water also flushes off wastes from the intestines which result from the process of digestion. After the process of digestion, our bodies eliminate the indigestible food substances from our bodies through the process of egestion. Water softens the stool and promotes regular bowel movements hence preventing constipation. Insufficient intake of water causes the colon to dry and stool to accumulate in the body thus leading to constipation. It is said that people who take sufficient amount of water daily have a healthy, radiant and younger looking complexion compared to their counterparts who take less water. This proposition is indeed a fact. This is because the skin just like any other body organ is made up of cells that require water. Sufficient intake of water causes the skin to be hydrated. Hydrated skin is elastic, resilient and plump hence it has less wrinkles. Sufficient water also maintains the balance of water and oil in the skin hence reducing the occurrence of blemishes and skin breakouts. Lack of hydration causes the skin to be dry, flaky and tight. The skin, therefore, becomes less resilient and develops wrinkles easily.Water boosts the immune system. Water aids in the transportation of oxygen to the body cells. Furthermore, water is instrumental in flushing out toxins from the body hence improving the body’s immunity. An alternative to pure mineral water is lemon water. Lemon water contains vitamin C . Vitamin C boosts the body immunity, prevents diseases and protects the body cells. Lemons also naturally detoxify the body hence lemon water aids in detoxification of the body. Some times when we are suffering from headache we are advised to drink water. This is because water relieves headaches. We suffer from headaches as a result of various factors. Most people view headaches as a symptom of a certain disease. This is not always the case because dehydration is one of the major causes of headache. Dehydration causes fatigue which then results into headache. Taking water therefore relieves headaches which result from dehydration.People who exercise regularly or those who take part in sports are familiar with cramps. Cramps result from involuntary tightening of the muscles that won’t relax. Cramps can occur in the middle of exercise or sport or after but in all cases, the occurrence of cramps causes unbearable pain to an individual. Cramps can occur as a result of various factors. One of those factors is dehydration. Dehydration makes the body more prone to cramps. That is why those who exercise regularly and sportspeople are advised to take fluids frequently especially water.Water should, therefore, be a part of diet as its benefits to our bodies are countless. You can choose to take pure water or other alternatives such as lemon water. Drinks such as soda, fizzy drinks and processed juices are, however, not an alternative to water since they contain chemicals which are toxic to the body which need to be eliminated. It is therefore advisable that after taking such drinks, you should take water to clear out the toxins that they leave behind in our bodies. Water is cheap and sufficient intake of it will save the large sums of money that we spent in hospitals to cure certain health conditions that could have been prevented through sufficient intake of water.
