A school multimedia centre refers to a resource that brings together multiple media that is used in teaching and learning.It brings together a group of resources within one building where both the teacher and the learners can find useful resources for teaching and learning.The centre is organized into rooms that serve different purposes.A multimedia centre is beneficial to both teachers and learners in a school.The number of rooms and resources in any multimedia centre depends on the following:a. Category of the schoolb. Level of the learnersC. Money available for the resourcesBENEFITS OF A SCHOOL MULTIMEDIA CENTREa. It improves the quality of education in a school.b. It helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice among learnersC. Is a place where learners get opportunity to learn using technologyd. Helps the learners in retention of content they have learnt in classe. They help in retaining learners in the school since it also provides different entertainment avenues.f. They improve and stimulate multimedia literacy in the learners.g. They have a potential of supporting learners personal development and talent growth.h. Reduces technological fear (technophobia) experienced by both teachers and students.i. Provides creative development of talents which is achievable by the youths of multimedia settings and equipment.ROOMS OF MULTIMEDIA CENTRE1) LIBRARYIs a resource centre that provides access to a variety of reference materials which learners can borrow,use and return.It can also be a physical room or a virtual space or both.A library collection includes:*Books,periodicals,newspapers,maps,manuscripr,other print materials*Collection of Compact Discs,video tapes,e- books,audio books and DVDs*A full range of databases.A good library should have physical reference materials and online reference materials,reading space with tables that one can use for serious studies.It should also have computers that learners can use to access online materials.2) DISPLAY ROOMContains different resource materials available to both teachers and students for use in class.It is a room that teachers can use to keep or display resources they have used in classroom teaching to make them available for the future.It has so many resources so that its walls can be called talking walls.They assist teachers to preserve teaching and learning materials without fear of losing it.3) PRESENTATION HALLIn modern schools,there is need for halls for use in conferencing of video,transmission of video through internet.They should be designed to allow projection of audio visual materials.The room can also be used for dramatized presentations and school entertainment programmes.Schools should have wholesome programmes that allow education entertainment to be part of and parcel of learning programmes.4) STORAGE ROOMA room where equipment is kept safely to avoid breakage or destruction or theft of materials stored.The furniture in a storage room should be carefully chosen to provide fixtures that are suited to different multimedia equipment available in the school.5) MULTIMEDIA LABORATORIESRefers to rooms fitted with computers and other presentation equipment to allow for a variety of multimedia projects.They should have technology assistant to assist the equipment and software required.6) MULTIMEDIA LEARNING SPACESAre rooms where students and staff can discuss as they watch multimedia projection without disturbing other users.The room is fitted with whiteboards and should have wireless connectivity to allow access to the internet.7). MULTIMEDIA SERVICE ROOMSRooms where students and staff can get facilities for photocopying,printing,scanning.That is short term services.Rooms are equipped with printers , scanners and photocopiers.
