ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. A candidate must satisfy the prescribed University of Nairobi requirements.
2. Subject to regulation 1 above, a candidate for admission to the Faculty of Arts (hereinafter referred to as “the Faculty”) must have any of the following as minimum qualifications: I. K.C.S.E. with a C+ or equivalent II. K.C.S.E. with a C plain or equivalent (Plus a Diploma or equivalent, K.C.E. Div. II or equivalent) from a recognized post-secondary institution. E.A.C.E. Div. II or equivalent III. K.A.C.E. or E.A.A.C.E. certificate with two principal passes or equivalent. IV. A degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
3. A candidate shall be allowed to register only in those course units and their combinations approved by the Faculty. Any modification of such combination(s) shall be allowed only after obtaining approval of the Faculty, provided such modification is done within the first two weeks of the semester.
4. A candidate must also satisfy requirements of the department(s) in which he/she wishes to register.
5. Continuing students must register for course units before the fist two weeks of the semester. DURATION OF DEGREE PROGRAMME
6. The minimum period required for a candidate to study and qualify for the award of the degree is seven (7) semesters. The maximum period allowed is sixteen (16) semesters, assuming two (2) semesters per academic year or twenty four (24) semesters, assuming three (3) semesters per academic year.
7. There shall be three (3) semesters in each academic year. The third semester shall be optional. A candidate wishing to complete the degree programme within seven (7) semesters may utilize the optional semester. But the candidate must consult the head(s) of relevant department(s) for the choice of appropriate course unit(s) and obtain approval from the Dean to register for the optional semester.

DEGREE OPTIONS AND LOADING


8. A candidate for a B.A. degree shall be required to register, study, sit examinations and pass in at least 44 course units, taken throughout his/her period of study. These units shall include Faculty-based Common Courses
(CCCs) and prescribed Common Undergraduate Courses (CUC). 9. i) Subject to Regulations 3 and 8 above, the minimum 44 course units in the B.A. degree programme shall be offered along the following four options:
OPTION ONE: Two Majors: 18 units from the first major discipline
18 units from the second major discipline 4 level 1 units from a third discipline
*4 units from the CCC, drawn from disciplines other than the three (3) above, and/or CUC . TOTAL = 44 OPTION TWO: One Major (Specialization) 32 units from the major discipline 4 level 1 units from a second discipline 4 level 1 from a third discipline
*4 units from the CCC, Drawn from disciplines other than the three (3) above, and/or CUC. TOTAL = 44 OPTION THREE: One Major and One Minor: 24 units from the major discipline 12 units from the minor discipline 4 level 1 units from a third discipline
*4 units from the CCC, drawn from disciplines other than the three (3) above, and/or CUC. TOTAL = 44 OPTION FOUR: One Major Two Minors: 18 units from the major discipline11 units from the first minor discipline 11 units from the second minor discipline
*4 units from the CCC, drawn from discipline other than the three (3) above, and/or CUC. TOTAL = 44
* The designated courses shall belong to the same pool as the University Common Undergraduate Courses. Each department shall contribute a course to the pool of Designated Common Courses (CCCs). ii) A candidate shall choose only ONE of these four options. Before choosing an option, a candidate shall, first, take and pass twelve (12) units from level I, drawn equally from any three disciplines in the Faculty. These units shall be included in the minimum number of units required for the chosen option. A candidate choosing option Two shall be required to have a mean grade of B PLAIN or higher in Level I in the discipline in which he or she wishes to specialize, and to meet any additional Departmental/Programme requirements.
iii) Should a candidate at any level wish to change his/her majors(s)/ Minors, he/she shall be required to take all courses prescribed at all levels for the new major(s)/|Minor(s).
iv) A candidate who does not pass all twelve units in Level I shall be allowed to carry up to FIVE incomplete or fail grades (Grade E) to Level II, provided that the aggregate grade for all the twelve course units or Level I (including any available marks in units with incomplete grade) shall be 40% or better. Such a candidate shall nevertheless be required to pass in all incomplete or failed Level I courses before graduation subject to regulation 30 (ii and iii) below. v) A candidate who scores an aggregate grade of less than 40% in all twelve units in Level I shall be required to retake or resit and pass, subject to regulation 30 (ii and iii) below, such units as shall raise the aggregate to 40% or better, so as to enable him/her to proceed to level II.
vi) No candidate shall be allowed to specialize in a discipline, programme or
Department in which he/she has obtained a fail grade in Levels I at first attempt.
vii) A candidate with one or more fail grades in Level I shall have the option of dropping the programme or Department concerned and choosing another one, instead of resitting or retaking the course unit(s) in which he/she obtained a fail grade. 10. Subject to Regulation 9 above, enrolment for other courses outside and within the Faculty, and at any level, shall be allowed provided it is done in consultation with relevant departments(s) and with the approval of the Deans concerned; provided also that the contents of the units enrolled for do not overlap.
11. Selection of units for major and minor disciplines must comply with the departmental requirements.
