How to handle yourself in a court of law

Many people may not be well versed on how to handle themselves in court. Here are a few pointers for you depending on your business in the court room.

1. Students on attachment

As a student you should be professionally dressed during this period you are attached in court. Females should wear dark suits either trouser or skirt whichever is your preference. They should be black,navy blue, Grey. The clothing should be dark so colors like Red, Yellow, Purple and other brights aren't allowed. If one is to wear a trouser suit let it be fitting and not unnecessarily tight. The coat should be below the waistline. The skirts should not be too short. Also bear in mind that some magistrates do not allow ladies to wear trousers in their coatroom so do your homework first as to your supervising magistrate. The shoes should also be of a dark color. Black, Brown and Navy Blue are okay. The shoes should be closed. It is not allowed to reveal toes unless of an ailment, where one then gets leave of the court. For Hindus let the sari be of dark colors. Those revealing the stomach are not allowed. The Men are also to wear dark suits. The shirts should be white, blue or stripped. The color should be cool. They should also wear Dark colored shoes. One should keep their conduct in check and uphold good etiquette.

2. Advocates and Court Officials

The above dressing code rules also applies to advocates and court officials. In addition advocates should address the magistrate with utmost respect. Before stating their point they should say"if it may please the court" or "Your Honor" or "My Lord". Where the court gives an order they should reply by stating "much obliged". In instances where the sitting magistrate or judge

are left in court after the day's business being the last advocate in court one needs to dress the court.

N/b: As the magistrate is entering the court everyone should stand and bow then sit after the magistrate sits. Also when the magistrate is leaving he hits the hammer and everyone stands and takes a bow as he/she leaves the court.
