In many African countries it is normal to come across people chewing sticks and using them as tooth brushes, these traditional toothbrushes have been in use for centuries and are believed to have health values to the teeth and gums. The sticks are however chosen from different trees like Salvadora persica, licorice bush and gum tree which are called “mti ya mswaki” in Swahili. The World Health Organization has also proven the use of these sticks as natural toothbrush. Using the stick is quite easy you just chew the pencil-stick to make frays which are used to clean the teeth.The Salvadora persica has the health value of protecting the teeth from bad breath and other infections, you might be wondering why your grandmother or father has got strong teeth than you and it’s simply because they are used to this traditional toothbrush which gives them a healthy and strong teeth. Apart from having health values they are also environmental friendly unlike the plastic ones.
