With the great increase in the amount of information that needs to be studied as students move up the academic ladder, it has become necessary not only for them to select what to read but also to read it as quickly as possible. The art of speed reading has therefore been developed to help the reader minimize his or her reading time especially in relation to grammar passages and set books. It is however important to remember that reading fast is not necessarily reading efficiently. You only become an efficient reader if you can both read fast and understand the message. Below are some of the do’s and don’ts for speed reading. The Do's:1. Photograph the message in your mind. 2. Read the message in meaningful clusters (phrases). The Don'ts1. Do not point at the words with your finger as you read.2. Do not vocalize.Sub-vocalize only when necessary for example in the case of a public speech and only for words that are difficult to pronounce.3. Do not regress, i.e. do not read a word or a sentence more than once.4. Do not read individual words but meaningful clusters (phrases).
