A number of considerations are important in preparing for examinations, some of which include:

1. Knowing the material that will be covered by the examinations. This demands that you have access to the syllabus in order to know the content or subject matter that you are expected to cover for the examinations. You must be thoroughly prepared for whatever material has been included in the syllabus. Use course outlines and read the recommended books.

2. Being aware of the type of examination questions likely to be set, e.g. objective, true-false, multiple choice, matching, completion or essay. It is important to know the type of questions because the manner of answering them varies from type to type.

3. Finding out the number of papers you are expected to sit, the time allocation for each paper, the number of questions you are expected to attempt and the weighting in terms of marks allocation for each question and section. To score as many marks as possible, you must know the conditions of the examination you are to sit for.

4. Revising regularly over the period of your study in school. Revision of materials covered for examinations should be routine and built up gradually towards the period of examinations so as not to leave out anything.

5. Discussing in groups helps to organize what you have read. Discussing in groups can present you with an opportunity for new insights of the coursed material as well as acting as an incentive to study.

6. Listening to your lecturer or teacher for areas of topic emphasis. Ensure that you attempt all your homework and c.a.ts for similar questions are likely to be set for the examinations. Attend all classes to make sure that you have a complete feel of the lecturer’s or teacher’s preferences.

7. Avoiding fatigue and boredom by building up

the needed energy for study through motivation, courage and determination to succeed in examinations. You must have adequate sleep of at least eight hours and a proper diet.

8. Avoiding anxiety as it is most likely to interfere with your examination performance. In most cases, anxiety is as a result of fear of failing in the examinations on realizing that you have not prepared adequately. In this case, you are best advised to revise regularly and prepare adequately. In some cases, anxiety can be overcome through physical exercises, games, recreation, discussing your work with colleagues and going about your studies normally. You must also make social contacts for relaxation and come to grips with the realities of everyday life around you.
