The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education results have been out for sometime now.Jubilation and disappointment fill the air in almost equal measure. Some parents feel like they have received the greatest reward from their children by virtue of good performance. For others, the results are a major letdown. The pressure to perform well in national examination seems to grip parents even more than the students themselves and they wait for the results with more anxiety than those who sat for the papers. The reason could be that parents see entry into a good university as the only way for their children to secure a good future and we all know how important high school grades are to get into university. Our education system has placed a premium on examination grades even when the playing ground is not fair. Some students learn in more endowed environments than others but this is never a consideration when setting national exams which are based on the expected ideal situations. In some cases, bright students perform poorly in national exams due to the tension they experience as a result of the pressure piled on them by their parents. Some students get into the exam room with threats hovering over their heads and this easily leads to loss of memory or concentration. What would be your advise to the students?
