The headteacher is the chief executive of the school. The success of any school depends on how effective the headteacher performs his/her duties.

The following are the functions of the headteacher:

1. Consulting with other members on the program and decision making.
2. Admission of children in the ECD center.
3. Collection and management of ECD/school funds.
4. Ensuring that teachers are paid their salaries.
5. Ensuring that children from ECD center get admission to primary school.
6. Planning for center development and implementing decisions made by parents and school committee.
7. Interpreting policy matters to teachers , parents and community.
8. Compiling and submitting statistics on ECD center to the relevant authorities.
9. Allocating duties and supervision of both teaching and support staff.
10. Ensuring that the ECD center is registered with the ministry of education, science and technology.
11. Liaising with the community leaders in the development of ECD center in charge of staff discipline.
12. Ordering food, learning materials and other equipment for children.
13. Provision and maintenance of relevant school records.
