Managers are the authoritative bosses of many organizations and they have been given the mandate of possessing some powers. This powers are meant to control the staff and increase productivity however when misused the results could be fatal. Here are the six basic powers possessed by a manager.1. Legitimate power.This power is granted by the position of the boss in the organization. This power is necessary for the boss to approve resources, give directions and take the overall control of operations in the organization.2. Guru power.The manager possess the power of being an expert in his area of specialisation and the surbodinates enjoy working with a manager who is a tremendous expert in that field since they gain knowledge and experience.3. Reward power.A manager has the power to give raises, promotions and other forms of reward to performing employees in an organization in order to boost their morale and hardwork.4. Punishment power.The power to demote, punish or withhold merit raises is possessed by a manager in order to enforce discipline and ethnicity among employees.5. Power of connection.The manager has the power to connect with prominent people in the organization, the industry or even the government.6. Likeable/referent power.This is a very good power. In this power the manager is liked by many people and this builds a good communication path between the employees and the top management hence facilitating effective feedback.A quality manager uses all the powers in moderation.
