Pests such as termites and white grub and diseases such as ratoon stunting and smut attack the plants and lowers the yields leading to low income for the farmers.

Accidental fires or fire set by arsonists destroy the cane resulting in heavy losses to the farmers.

Flooding of markets by cheap imported sugar results in unfair competition causing delay in payment to the farmers.

Delays in harvesting reduce the quality tonnage of the cane reducing the farmer's earnings.

Closure of some factories such as Ramisi and Miwani has deprived farmers of their source of income and annual closures of factories for servicing of machines disrupts the farmers calendar of activities.

Delays is disbursing payments to farmers by the sugar companies. This reduces the farmers' morale and reduce their capacity in carrying out extensive farming.

Closure of some sugar processing companies. There are some cases where companies have closed due to mismanagement by top officials. The grounding of these companies has led to lack of market for the sugar cane.
