We all know about first days in school, but this one is different. A student Pilot is a very focused student. He/she is finally achieving what he/she has always wanted in life. Am going to tell u about my First day in Flying School.

It was the day I had always looked forward to. After passing all the requirements needed by the KCAA (Kenya Civil Aviation Authority) and got a SPL (Student Pilot License) I had finally enrolled at DAC Flying School in Wilson Airport Nairobi. So on the first day I woke dressed on the smart school uniform which is very similar to that of a captain of a big airline transport company. I felt so high.

On arriving to school which is situated just next to the airfield, I was assigned an Instructor who would guide me during flying lessons and introduced to ground Instructors who are like teachers. Then I was issued with stationary, a pair of headsets which cost ksh 45,000, a flight computer which I thought looked like a standard computer til I saw it, it was a piece of white plastic with black markings on it.

After keeping my things safe, then the flying part came. Its called the flight familiarization. It is the worst flight a pilot wilL ever have to go through. We walked with the Instructor to the small plane a Piper Cherokee type. They are used in flying sports because they are very high performance. He did the preflight checks and then we entered the plane. So the Instructor asked me if I was going to do the take off or the landing part. I was like, hey are u serious... its my first time am not a pilot.

The Instructor said I was going to do both but I thought he was joking.

After taxiing to the runway and requesting the tower for take off, he took is hands of the controls an told me to do it. He told me as soon as I heard clearance to take off from the tower, I add full power then pull on the control column (yoke) a little bit.

So I did that and we were airborne. In the air it was hell. The Instructor did all the stunts he could to make me make sure I wanted to become a pilot. The experience was, anyway good. Learning Nairobi from the sky is far much hard but I got it anyway.

After getting damn scared of the 60 degree turns and the nose downs and nose ups, the landing part I had my eyes closed so I din't see anything happen. I was just glad we got to the ground safe.

Thts it, The first flight in the cockpit!
