Fire is a necessity yet a catastrophic element when it strikes adversely. The basic components of fire include heat, fuel and oxygen. Fires can be classified into several classes. These entail:

1. Class A. This class incorporates the ordinary or readily combustible materials such as blankets, books, chairs, cushions and curtains.
2. Class B. These include the flammable liquids such as spirit.
3. Class C. These include flammable gases and electricity.
4. Class D. These consist of readily combustible metals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium
There are many causes of fire such as arson and carelessness.
Carelessness is the most common cause of fire and it incorporates things such as leaving fire unattended, accidents, unsupervised heaters and fueling stoves.

There are innumerable ways in which we can prevent fire. These include:
1. Good housekeeping. This entails using organizing the house, make sure the gas is turned off when not in use
2. Keep storage and working areas free of trash.
3. Do not fuel gasoline and other petroleum-powered equipment while they are hot.
4. Store flammable liquids and gases away from park producing areas such as near sockets.
5. Observe correct power ratings of electrical outlets. Consult the services of a competent non-scrupulous electrician to repair the electricity as may be necessary.
6. If you smell gas, do not switch electricity on or off.

We are all human beings thus accidents are bound to occur at any time in our lives. In this particular case, when fire occurs, do not panic; try practicing the following survival tactics. When you discover a fire:
1. Activate the alarm
2. Assist other people to get out of the burning place and direct them to a fire assembly point. This is essential especially for head count.
3. Switch off electric mains.
4. Call for help. When screaming for help.
5. Close doors behind you but do not lock.
6. Do not use lifts when escaping from a storey burning building.
7. Call the local fire brigade.
8. Do not go back to the building

neither goes too close to smoke.
9. If you catch fire, stop where you are, drop to the floor, and roll on the floor to smother the flames.
