Does JAB have any relevance in today's education sector?

The joint admissions board (JAB) is the body charged with regulating admission of students into public universities. The board whose offices are in obscure, cramped up rooms in the administration block of the university of airobi say alot about its current state of affairs.

One of the problems ailing JAB is poor funding. The only source of funds for JAB is the application and revision of courses fees that students pay. Because of this JAB is not able to implement its programmes properly.

The board cannot be able to provide career guidance and selection, which is a role they should play. JAB continues to admit students to courses which are not market oriented simply because they are constrained by bed capacity which is the main consideration when deciding on the number of students to admit. Students are therefore forced to take courses that they did not apply for, have no interest in or have low demand on the job market. Those who are lucky are able either to revise their course selection or get a faculty transfer upon admission into the university.

With the recent exponential growth in the educational sector such as the increasing number of private universities in Kenya and the changing times in skills required in the current job market, the relevance of JAB has been overtaken by events. Unless there is a total overhaul in the way that the joint admissions board is run, it has outlived its mandate and in my opinion should be disbanded.
