Political leadership and its ideals

It’s the election time. Politicians are busy with their campaigns, strategizing on who met who, what alliance is coming up, who should vie or not vie, among other issues. It is real helter skelter and the elections board has not yet even given the green light for the commencement of campaigns. It is true that the new constitution has brought about many positions all of which have to be filled in the forthcoming elections. The political parties are therefore spending sleepless nights to ensure that they come up with the correct strategies so as to garner as much posts as possible in the coming elections. However one thing which the politicians seem to have forgotten is that they are leaders; they influence people in a certain way, and they have people who look up to them. For this reason there is the need to highlight what is expected of them even though they are busy campaigning.

Leadership is about influencing people positively. Creating animosity between different tribes is not part of that positive influence. As political leaders, there is the need for each one of them to ensure that they strive to make people live in harmony. I envision a time when a political leader will stand above tribal affiliation and stand for the unity of the whole society. Some may argue that it may not be a wise decision politically but I say it is the best thing a politician will ever do. The reason being that people give them audience. They can therefore use that opportunity to spread the gospel of peace. A politician who therefore stands for unity, at all times, not only in the glare of the cameras, is a good leader.

Another thing is about talking real issues that affect the people. It is said that politicians

are masters at giving false promises. Why would you bite more than you can chew? If you are a political leader and you know that there are things that you cannot be able to fulfill, you should go on record by saying that you cannot deliver that. Why would you promise someone wine only for you to bring water? I envision a leader who can be able to tell the people the truth and let them make informed decisions.

The welfare of the society needs to be improved. Some politicians do not visit their electorates once they get into that lump position. You were chosen to lead the society and it is only ethical for you to visit them occasionally and know how they are doing, identify issues affecting them, and then try to solve that which you can. Political leaders play a key role in societal development. A leader who therefore does not interact with the society is not fit to lead the people. We want leaders who are “human”, that is, they have the society at heart and understand that the people need to live in a secure, healthy, clean society.

Politicians also need to have morals and ethics. I wish for a country where a political leader will stand against corruption, no matter the sum of money involved; leaders who will not shield their colleagues from being prosecuted for corruption, and leaders who will stand for the rule of law always. We are not in a barbaric state. We have rules and regulations that govern each and every one of us. Nobody, including the political leaders, is above the law. We are all equals in front of the law. A good leader is one who will stand by this rule no matter the circumstances. That notion of “it is our time to eat” should be completely dispelled and we turn on a new leaf of “let us all share the pie”.

That is my description of an ideal leader. I therefore urge all our leaders to adopt the principles of a good leader and move this country forward. Let us play our role in ensuring that we elect the right political leaders.
