Road accidents have claimed thousands of lives in Kenya. This is a very sad affair that needs to stop immediately. For how long are we going to let reckless drivers ruin the lives of innocent Kenyans? For how long are we going to have accidents just because of our bad roads? This road carnage has to stop. It has to stop Now! This article looks at some of the best ways to prevent road accidents in our beloved country, Kenya.

Always wear your safety belt.

The late Michuki enforced this rule a few years ago when he was the roads Minister. At that time there were very few cases of deaths caused by road accidents. But, must we wait for a law to be set for us to wear our safety belts? No, we don't. We need to use our sound judgement to know that a safety belt saves lives.

Do not drink and drive.

If you know you are going to be drinking, then please remember to go with a friend who doesn't drink.

Avoid mobile phones when driving

This is one thing that most drivers are fond of. Never answer your phone while driving. While driving your eyes should be focussed on the road and not on anything else.

Are your airbags working?

Ensure that your car is installed with airbags and that they are working properly. Airbags are very good at reducing body impact in case of an accident.

Drive on the right lane.

Many Kenyan drivers are fond of driving on wrong lanes especially when caught in traffic jams. Always use the right lane because you never know when a vehicle would be coming head on.

Don't drive when fatigued

Some road accidents are caused when a driver resorts to sleeping while driving. Yes, I have experienced drivers veering off the road just because they

are asleep. If you feel fatigued then inform your boss or let someone else drive.

Adhere to traffic rules and regulations

While driving ensure you follow all the traffic signals and rules so as to ensure safety on our roads.

Keep a safe distance between your car and the car in front.

Never ever drive too closely to a car that is in front of you, just in case it suddenly brakes.

Frequent car maintenance

Some accidents are caused by faulty car equipment and accessories. Always ensure that your car is in good condition before driving.

Finally, do not ever be in a rush. Never over speed and don't overtake.
