Poverty seems to be almost synonymous with Kenya. Majority of Kenyans are poor and they live below the poverty line.Poverty has had adverse effects on our country. It has made most Kenyans to live below-standard lives. It has encouraged most Kenyans to turn to crime as a full-time occupation.Others have turned to drugs for comfort and as a way of relieving stress. It has made most Kenyans go hungry.Poverty has led to the sprawling of slums. Most Kenyans cannot access healthcare because they are poor.Kenya is slowly being turned into the face of poverty. It is heartbreaking to see malnourished and starving children.Poverty has denied children a chance to get education due to lack of school fees.Scenes associated with poverty have become familiar scenes in Kenya. It is a sad that we have allowed poverty to spread like wild fire.Complaining will not solve this problem. We need to act and act fast for that matter. We should not allow this situation to continue like this.We should do something about it.What can Kenya do in the face of such disadvantages?First and foremost,we must get our priorities right. We need to empower our citizens and invest in projects that will spur economic development. We need to give first priority to projects that will benefit our citizens in the short run and long run.Secondly,we must free our minds from the dependency syndrome.Kenyan problems require Kenyan solutions and it is our responsibility to solve them.We can and we must learn to do things ourselves.Thirdly,we must unite.Together we stand, divided we fall.We should tackle poverty together as a nation and not as individuals.Fourthly,we need to learn from our past mistakes and avoid repeating them in future.Past mistakes can be used in planning how to tackle poverty because experience is the best teacher.Fifthly,we need to seek the advice of others. We need to seek the advice of other countries that have successfully fought poverty in their countries.Last but not least,we need to elect good leaders. Our leaders will be in the forefront in the fight against poverty.Good leaders will win the fight against poverty but wrong leaders will let us down.It is therefore important to evaluate candidates that have offered themselves for elective posts. It is your future and country's future that is at stake, vote wisely.Good leaders will be crucial in the fight against poverty. However, kicking poverty out of Kenya is an enormous task.It is taxing and it is not a walk in the park.We need to tackle poverty sooner than later and everyone must be involved in a coordinated programme to ensure that meaningful success is achieved. This is not wishful thinking and it is possible with proper planning.Fellow Kenyans, let us join hands as we kick poverty out of Kenya.
