About twenty three kilometers from The Nairobi Central Business District(CBD) on the Nairobi-Thika Highway lies 1,100 acres of flat land:Kenyatta University.

The so-long a journey to university prestige started sometimes back in 1965,barely three years after Kenya was granted independence by The British Colonial Masters. It started when Templer Barracks was handed over to the Kenyan Government by the British. The barracks were converted into a mid-level institution known as Kenyatta College, which had two sections:The Secondary Education Division (SED)and The Division for Teacher Education(DTE).The Secondary Division was from Form one to Form Four which were removed in 1969 to pave way for Advanced Level Classes. These classes evolved to become a major factory that produced graduates in the field of sciences.

Kenyatta college became a branch of University of Nairobi in 1975,following a parliamentary act where the name was changed from Kenyatta College to become Kenyatta University College. The first of its own students were admitted in 1972 to undertake a Bachelor of Education Degree. They were two hundred in number. As a result of these swift developments in The Kenyatta University College, certificate courses were wiped out to pave way for undergraduate diplomas.

It was not until August 23,1985 when the presidential assent was made and the institution was made a full-fledged University. The act started being operational in September 1,1985 and inauguration later followed in December 17,1985.

Kenyatta University then commenced the establishment of other new colleges, and on the list was Jommo Kenyatta College of Agriculture And Technology(JKUAT).JKUAT is now a fully-fledged university too.To date Kenyatta University has its Main Campus in Kahawa and five other constituent colleges. In the list of allied campuses of The Kenyatta University are Ruiru Campus,Parkland Campus,Kitui Campus,Mombasa Campus and Pwani University College. The university also has several regional centers operational under The Institute of Distance,Open and e-Learning (ODeL).These centers offer an academic and administrative support

to learners under Open and Distance Learning. These centers are situated in Mombasa,Nairobi,Embu,Nyeri,Nakuru,Kakamega,Kisumu and Garissa.
