Kenya's North Eastern province lags behind in every sector as far as development is concerned and education has not been left out.In national examinations results the region posts the poorest results. The top candidates in the area would not rank even among the top 100 in some areas like Nairobi.

A country's development can go no faster than the level of access to education of its citizens. It would therefore be imperative to raise the standards of education in this area. One of the key challenges is the nomadic nature of communities inhabiting the North Eastern region. The families move from place to place in search of water and pasture with their children but the schools do not move.

This means that a child's schooling is interrupted and at times totally stopped. The government has attempted to curb this by introducing mobile schools but this has not been effective.
It would thus be a welcome choice to introduce boarding schools in these areas funded by the government so that children can school without interruption. These would be comprehensive schools that have all the facilities a child needs from classrooms to textbooks and also dormitories. There should also be people to take care of the younger children so that they can join these schools from class one.

The schools should include teachers houses in the compound with all amenities like water and electricity so that teachers are comfortable and are not scared away by the harsh conditions.Security should also be provided.A good idea would be to use solar power in these schools to lower costs which is very viable considering the amount of sunshine in these areas.
Am sure that such schools will go a long way to make education accessible and give all children a level playing field.
