The importance of Physical Education in Kenyan schools

Physical Education, also known as P.E in most schools in Kenya is not considered important in many schools. There are many schools where the subject is always replaced by another subject which the teachers think is more important than Physical Education. It is therefore important for such teachers and every other person who does not take Physical Education seriously to know the importance of the subject. The following is the importance of Physical Education in Kenyan schools.

1) Reducing stress.
During the Physical Education, the students engage in a lot of fun and games which make them very happy. This tends to reduce any kind of stress that the students might be getting at school from the many challenges that come with school life. Due to this fact, we can also say that the subject also makes the students to perform better in class because without this stress, the students are able to give more attention to their studies.

2) It is very healthy.
Some students are very obsessed with learning to an extent of not engaging in any other activity. This can be very unhealthy. However, Physical Education allows such students to do some exercises since it is a subject and no one is allowed to skip subjects. Also, the physical activities during this lesson are well monitored by a professional who understands the kind of exercises that make you healthy. It allows you to burn the excess calories in the body and allows proper blood circulation in the body among other healthy things.

3) Encouraging team work and human interaction.
During Physical Education in many schools in Kenya, the students are divided into two or more groups which compete against one another. The students therefore are forced to work together in these groups or teams in order to be the

winning team. The students also interact a lot during this exercise. This encourages team work and human interaction among the students thus not only making them to live together harmoniously but to also know one another.

4) The students show off their talents.
Some students are very well skilled and talented in various sports, for example, in football, volleyball, athletics or even rugby and many other sports. Some of these talents cannot be discovered during any other time other than during Physical education. This allows the students to not only show and discover their various talents in sports, but to also improve these talents during Physical education.

5) Refreshing their minds.
The activities that students usually engage in during the lesson allow them to relax their minds since they do not require serious thinking. The period also gives the students some time away from their books. When their minds relax, they become refreshed thus making them even ready to learn more when they get to class after the lesson.

6) Reducing strikes and aggressiveness.
Since the lesson is fun and reduces stress, it also reduces aggressiveness and bad attitudes from the students which might be as a result of the stress they get at school. It also reduces fights since it allows the students to interact positively and know one another better.

7) Improving body coordination.
The physical activities the students engage in improve their body coordination. This is because it trains their bodies to respond better to the stimuli and commands that originate from the brain. This makes them to do a lot of other physical activities better than they did before. It could even improve their handwriting as a result of their improved body coordination.

Physical Education has so many benefits that it offers to the students, which also makes the school as a whole and even the students’ parents to benefit a lot from the lesson. School would be a lot better if everyone would see and know the importance of Physical Education.
