The importance of a school canteen in schools in Kenya

Many schools in Kenya have a canteen. This is a movable shop whereby the students are allowed to by some food stuffs among other things which they really need. Not many teachers or parents see the need to have a canteen at school. However they need to know how important these school canteens are. The following is the importance of school canteens to schools in Kenya.

1) They increase concentration during classes.
The food supplied to the students by the school at the dining hall is not always enough. Sometimes, the food might be so little for some of the students that they end up feeling as hungry as they were before they ate the food. This makes such students to lack concentration during classes since all most people ever think about when they are hungry is the pain in their stomachs. However, the school canteen allows the students who are not satisfied with the amount of food they are being given at the dining hall to get more food at the canteen. Therefore, all students get to concentrate during lessons without being distracted by hunger thanks to the school canteen.

2) They deal with the students who are allergic to some foods.
There are some students who are allergic to so many foods that the school cannot afford to cook for them different food all the time. Some schools actually do not always remember to cook special food for such students every time the meal being eaten by the other students has something which the students are allergic to. This makes such student to suffer a lot. Some of them are forced to eat the food which they are allergic to thus making get an allergic reaction which sometimes results in them having to go to

the hospital. However, when the school has a canteen, such students do not have to suffer. All that they have to do is to buy something to eat which they are not allergic to from the canteen since most canteens offer a wide variety of foods and snacks.

3) They reduce stress.
As the saying goes, a hungry man is an angry man. When students do not get enough to eat, they tend to get stressed and become very aggressive and violent. However, when the students buy the amount of food that they need from the canteen, this reduces their stress a lot. As a result of this, there is a lesser chance that the students will ever do anything violent or aggressive.

4) They sell some very important items.
Some students do not always do their shopping properly. You might find that a student has forgotten to buy some very important items when they are going to school like for example, a toothbrush, some pen or even a pencil among others. Even so, some canteens sell some of these items thus allowing such students to buy the items without having to go back home or without having to wait until the school closes.

The canteen is a very important part of the schools in Kenya. Every person at school or involved with school work must understand the importance of the school canteen before they make any conclusions about it.
