Kenya Freedom Fighters and Torture Victims Live like Destitutes

Doctors tirelessly offer their professional services even in the oddest of times if only to fulfill their Hippocratic Oath and stand by their ethical code. Teachers willingly teach students and end up making presidents, doctors, engineers and lawyers who serve this country despite the little pay. If you think about it, all this was made possible by our freedom fighters that fought for the independence of this great nation.

And when we gained freedom, human rights activists and many second liberation politicians championed for anew constitution and a devolved system of government to ensure that even the voices of the marginalized communities of this country were heard. And what happened when all that was achieved? If you don’t know allow me to quote an infamous Swahili proverb, ‘Ahsante ya punda ni mateke.’

Look around you, it’s happening right this moment in our country. The thing that amazes me no more about Kenyans is how we easily forget where we have come from and the things we have been through to get where we are as a nation. It is a karma we are destined to repeat for a long time. We vilify our heroes and extol those who made little contribution in the country. If you were to pay keen attention to our governments, you would realize that they almost always find a reason not to pay money awarded to the victims of torture while they easily get millions to pay for breach of contracts and procurement that are at times staged; such as the National Cereal and Produce Board saga.

And so the chickens come home to roost; it’s only a matter of time. If there is one thing I’ve learnt out of all this, is not to bite the hand that feeds you. If I could quote Robert F. Godec on

this, ‘there are grave consequences that will come out of it some day.’
