Kenya-Somalia Maritime Row/Conflict

INTRODUCTION
For years, Kenya and Somalia have argued over where their maritime boundary in the Indian Ocean runs. The bone of contention is a narrow triangle off the coast of Africa, in the Indian Ocean, about 100,000 square kilometres or 62,000 square miles. It supposedly has a large deposit of oil and gas, but it's not clear to which country it belongs. It has been a source of tensions between the two countries; that is, in 2014 where Somalia sued Kenya at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and in February 2019 whereby the Kenya government accused Somalia of exhibiting and allegedly putting on auction oil blocks in the contested. Somalia actions has raised eyebrows as Kenya has been playing an active role in the African Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to help in restoration of peace and stability in Somalia by waging war against the Al-Qaeda linked group known as the Al Shabab and has also helped in the accommodation of Somali refugees. Kenya pulled out of the case in March 2021. Despite this, it is important to understand the dynamics of the conflict as this paper will seek to do.
