Summary

This project is primarily concerned with the poor economic growth of most of the tourists merchandise sellers. I noted there was a consensus variation among the authors on the matter as mentioned above. The objectives of the study include finding out the types of merchandise that tourist buy, establishing the reasons why tourists buy this merchandises, to establish the reasons why people involve themselves in the tourist merchandise business and to establish the economic contribution of merchandise business to the merchandise sellers and to tourism sector. The study employed drafted interview questions and the use of secondary data as the major instrument for gathering information. The data gathered was analysed based on frequency distribution of respondent answers and shown in contingency tables. Based on the major findings from the analysis of data, conclusions were drawn and recommendations made.

From the findings, relatively high taxation, limited raw materials, seasonality, lack of or limited training and relatively low profitability due to heavy dependence by family members on the vendors in the merchandise sector are contributors to the poor economic status of the vendors. The study recommends that the government should move with speed and efficiency to bridge the gap of cultural and ethnic differences in Kenya in order to ensure appreciation and celebration of cultural diversities from which the curios get their uniqueness. Also the study recommends that the government should license specific dealers to sell cowry shells from dead fauna in a regulated manner.
