Summary

Purpose of the course
This course aims at enabling the student to estimate population parameter using sample characteristics.

Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1. Discriminate estimators using the properties of unbiasedness, consistency, sufficiency and efficiency so as to arrive at the best estimator.
2. Derive estimators using methods of moment, maximum likelihood, least squares and minimum variance.
3. Construct confidence intervals for the mean and variance of a normal population.
Course Content
Unbiasedness, consistency, sufficiency (joint, minimal and complete) and efficiency properties of point estimators. Methods of point estimation: Moment, Maximum likelihood and Least squares. Cramer-Rao inequality for a single parameter. Minimum variance unbiased estimators. Interval Estimation: level of significance and confidence intervals. Mean square error, Loss and risk functions. Bayes estimation and minimax estimation.

LESSON ONE
CONCEPT OF ESTIMATION
1.1 Introduction
In this lesson we introduce the concept of estimation and distinguishing between parameters and statistics. Two types of methods of estimation will also be discussed.
1.2 Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson the learner will be able to:
1.2.1 Explain the concept of estimation of parameters using sample characteristics or statistics.
1.2.2 Distinguish between point and interval estimations
1.2.1 Concept of Estimation
The objective of statistics is to make an inference about a population based on information contained in a sample. Most statistical inference procedures involve either estimation or hypothesis testing. This course looks at estimation.
Assume that some characteristic of elements in a population can be represented by a random variable X whose probability density function, p.d.f, is f(x, , where the form of the density is assumed known except that it contains unknown parameter . Further assume that n observed values x1 , x2 , …xn of a random sample X1 , X2 , …..Xn from f(x, , can be observed. On the basis of observed values x1 , x2 , …xn , it is desired to estimate the value of the parameter or some function of the unknown parameter.
Population characteristics are called parameters and are usually unknown. Examples:
(a) Binomial distribution,
(b) Poisson distribution,
(c) Normal distribution,
