Summary

Politics in Africa is a course modeled to capture the gradual historical development of Africa‘s political structures and the challenges it has faced from the pre-colonial, colonial and post-independent periods. This course gives students a rare opportunity to interact with and understand the various forms of political control in Africa and relate this knowledge to the current local and global political challenges. This course will also make students understand that African countries will continue to be racked by conflicts unless leaders agree about how to govern their multi-faceted nation-states and how to distribute their economic resources equitably. To achieve its intended objectives, this course specifically revolves around the following selected themes:
Contents
1. Traditional Political Structures in Africa
2. Impact of Colonization
3. Conflict in the Colonial State and the Rise of African Nationalism
4. Competing Political Ideologies
5. Ethnicity and Political Identity
6. Centralization of the African State
7. Military Interventions in African Politics
8. Hegemonic Influence on African Politics; The Crisis of Governance and State Collapse
9. Democracy and Political Pluralism
10. State and Civil Society in post-independent Africa
Course Evaluation
Course evaluation will be in two parts; continuous assessment and the final examination. The continuous assessment will comprise a sit-in cat and a take-away assignment constituting 30%. The final examination will account for 70% of the total marks. As part of the learning process, a lot of seriousness is attached to class attendance and contribution

TRADITIONAL POLITICAL STRUCTURES IN AFRICA
The role of indigenous political structures in the governance and politics of the postcolonial African state has been neglected by scholars since African independence. However, the resilience of these structures makes it necessary for scholars to conduct critical inquiry into the significance of these institutions. By traditional systems, we refer to genuine traditional institutions, uncontaminated by colonial or post-independence modifications or distortions
No African society existed in a vacuum nor was =stateless‘ as each of these societies had a system of government. Each society had a set of rules, laws, and traditions, sometimes called customs that established how the people would live together peacefully as part of larger group.
Before Europeans came, Africans had varied ways of life under different kinds of governments. Kings ruled great empires like Mali and Songhai. Some states had democratic rule. Some groups had no central government. Some Africans lived in great cities like Timbuktu, while others lived in small villages deep in the forests. African societies developed diverse political systems based on local needs and however, colonialism interrupted Africa's natural political development by
African societies, throughout the centuries, have been organized on the basis of a social contract whereby people come together to form a state or nation because they believe that, through their combined efforts, they will be more able to realize their common aspirations for peace and security, which are essential for their physical and spiritual welfare and progress, both as individuals and as a community. It is to achieve these objectives that the people agree collectively to surrender to a king or ruler the power to control their lives and to organize and regulate activities within their society.
