COURSE TITLE: EDUCATIONAL MEDIA AND RESOURCES

TOPIC 1
INTRODUCTION AND COMMUNICATION PROCESS
1.1 WHAT IS COMMUNICATION? (DEFINITION OF COMMUNICATION)
Communication has been defined differently by many scholars and practitioners. The following
definitions have been put forward:
- It’s the exchange of ideas or concepts between people.
- It’s establishing commonness with someone so that the gap between ideas and people is
bridged.
In the classroom communication enables the teacher and learners to establish commonness.
Through communication the teacher is able to transfer knowledge skills and attitudes from
him/herself to the pupils.
1.1.1 TERMS USED IN COMMUNICATION
Encoder In the process of communication, the sender or source of the message is referred to as
the encoder.
Decoder The person receiving the message and decodes it is referred to as the decoder.
Feedback It refers to an inquiry, response or experiment. Feedback can be positive (when the
required result is achieved) or negative; instantaneous (when the response is immediate) or
delayed. Feedback is used to gauge the effectiveness of a particular message put forth or
situation that has taken place.
1.2 COMPONENTS OF THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS
The communication process involves two groups of people i.e. a sender and a receiver.
When both groups of people are involved in communication, the following components are
found:
1. Sender: This is the source of an idea it can be a book, graphics or people (i.e. the
communicator). The sender encodes the message (expresses the idea in form of words,
symbols, graphics etc).
2. Message: This is the idea which is communicated/transmitted by the sender. In the
classroom this is the subject matter of the teaching subject.
3. Channel/Medium: Through a channel the message is relayed from the sender to the
receiver. The communication channels (media) are therefore a means of passing a
message to the audience or class. This maybe spoken words, visuals (pictures and films),
print media, audio (radio), real objects (realia) and displays. The channel should allow the
receiver to use their five senses to interact with it. Teachers should use channels that are
familiar to their learners and appropriate for what they are teaching.
