Summary

Proposal on the determination of antimicrobial susceptibility of e.Coli and staphylococcus aureus isolates in vitro.

ABSTRACT
Escherichia coli continues to be a menace over a lot of decades. It is a Gram-negative bacteria that causes a lot of infections ranging from intestinal to extra-intestinal infection such as urinary tract infection, meningitis among others. However, E. coli remains the leading bacteria living in the gastrointestinal system of humans and animals. On the other hand, Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacteria that cause skin infections such as boils. It also causes food poisoning and respiratory infections. The emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains is a global health concern since the existing drugs are becoming ineffective. This makes it difficult to treat common infections. For example, methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and resistance of E. coli to third-generation cephalosporins (3GC(K. G. C. & S. B. M. M. M., 2020). Antibiotic-resistant infections are substantial health and economic burden to the health care system. It also frustrates the affected patients, including their families. There is an urgent need, therefore, to do elaborate research on the susceptibility of several antibiotics to different bacterial strains to develop new drugs with high medical potency. Coordinated efforts to implement the new policies, renew research efforts as well as exploring new avenues to manage the crisis are urgently needed. This study aims to determine the susceptibility of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus to selected antibiotics in vitro. Sample collection and analysis will be done in Regional Veterinary Investigation Laboratory, Eldoret. Drug sensitivity tests will be performed using Disc Diffusion Method according to the standards of the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLS(Kirby-Bauer Disk Diffusion Susceptibility Test Protocol, 2009). The data obtained from this study will be stored in the Microsoft Excel package. Analysis of data will be done using Chi-Square Test to compare the susceptibility patterns. Results will then be presented in descriptive statistics using frequency tables and cross-tabulation.
