Summary

Quintilian’s Thoughts on Examination And its Relevance to the Kenyan Examination System
Marcus Fabius Quintilianous, famously known as Quintilian, was a Roman educated and a scholar He majorly contributed to educational theory and literacy criticism. Quintilian’s thoughts on examinations were solely based on the idea that examinations are the only means to promote learners from one level to the other, that this was and still is the only way to know or measure one’s excellence on what had been learnt. His point on examination was that Examinations are the only means to promote learners from one level hence showing its relevance on the examination system in Kenya requires that we look on how Kenya as a country puts its emphasis on exams during the 844 system and currently under CBC. This essay will provide an insight about the educational systems in Kenya that is 844 and the Competence-based curriculum educational system which is currently being put in place and it as well looks at the emphasis put on examinations the two curricula.

The 844 system was an exam-oriented curriculum that put too much emphasis on examination which in turn and made teaching and learning to be overly focused on the performance in examination this in turn left learners who went through this system to solely believe that in life one had to pass their examinations and that success was only based on well performance hence students were purposed to pass exams instead of gaining knowledge of gaining through training as Quintilian had suggested. The pressure inflicted on students to pass examinations and attain good grades was too high and this contributed to cheating. Many Kenyan parents and students have cheated and lied about in the past in order to gain access to prestigious schools such as Alliance, Kenya High, Maseno School, Mang’u, Starehe, Limuru Girls, among others, and access to prestigious programmes at universities such as medicine,
