Summary

AGD 201- INTRODUCTION TO GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT THEORIES
1.1.1 Rationale for Theory in Development
Introduction
In this section we will define the key concepts in this course:
Theory
Theory- is a system of ideas intended to explain something or a phenomenon. For example, Darwin’s theory of evolution. Theory is built upon one or more hypothesis and upon evidence. A theory contains reasoning and logical connections that lead to certain conclusions. Theories can change based on new evidence. Can you think of theories that your teachers used in different subjects during your secondary education? For instance, the plat tectonic theory which explains landmass motion to form continents; the newton’s theory of gravity; the cell theory of organisms etc.
Development is a continuous process of a positive change which aims to distribute justice, economic growth, collective and individual participation in the economic, political and culture of one’s community or society.
1.1.1 What is the relevance of theory in development?
Why do we study theories in development?
Here we shall discuss several development theories which explain the nature of development and the reasons for development or under-development. By studying these theories certain historical facts stand out. We get to know how certain forces work for or against development. For example, we get to know of the exploitations of African nations by developed countries which left many development scars (Through theory we learn about many oppressions; political, cultural, spiritual and economic which happened to African by dominating nations which we have never been able to recover from)
1.1.1 Development Theories
The study of theories provides new opportunities to overcome the problems of underdevelopment. This means that after careful analysis of problems related to underdevelopment we may come up with solutions. This will allow us to discuss the development of our nation.
NOTE: In order to understand the role of theory in development it is important to understand the model of theory. Theory has four roles
(i) Description- Theory plays the role of describing the problem. It details the existing issue, for example why an area can be said to be underdeveloped. It gives details of the facts of the existence of that problem, the characteristics and the existing conditions.
(ii) Analysis- Theory analyzes the reasons for the existence of that problem. It asks such questions such as why does that reality exist? What is the origin of that reality? How is that reality perpetuated? Who benefits? Who loses? This applies to a person who is denied personal development, a region or country can all use this analysis to find answers.
(iii) Vision-Theory describes an ideal world. It sets goals for change. It leads us to ask what we would like to see to combat a bad situation. What kind of concrete plan can be put in place to address issues of underdevelopment? When we discuss theories we should keep these questions in mind.
(iv) Strategy-Theory should lead us to developing or thinking of a strategy for change. We should ask ourselves question such as what in of change do we want to see? How do we achieve the goals we have set? What tools and resources do we need? What institutions do we need to appeal to (schools, policies etc. So in general theory should address all confusion as to why we are we are underdeveloped.
