ABSTRACT
Market acts as a pivot point in the agricultural transformation process. Access to market plays an important role in exploiting the marketing opportunities for mango farmers. Improving profitability for small scale farmers is important in raising their income and reducing poverty in rural areas. The problem of market access is linked to farmers’ inability to meet market standards, low volume of produce, wide dispersion of producers, presence of middlemen and perceived low prices. Mangoes are produced in eastern and coastal areas in Kenya. Farmers in Makueni County have taken mango farming leading making the county to be the leading producer in Kenya. In the area the strategies to unlock the market access among mango farmers are wanting and these have resulted to limited marketing outlets. This study therefore seeks to investigate the factors influencing the choice of marketing channels in Makueni County. The study will adopt qualitative Survey method to collect data and analyze relationship. A sample size of 50 will be drawn from a population of 500 farmers. The sample size will be randomly selected using simple random selection technique. Questionnaires and personal interviews will be used as research tool and data collection will involve both primary and secondary data which will collected from books, journals, magazines and relevant literature from the library. Data analysis will involve use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequencies distribution and measures of central tendencies such as mean, mode and median will be used to analyze and summarize data.
