The concept of ‘brown envelope’ has proven to be a cause of bias, imbalance and as a contributor of lack of objectivity in the dissemination of news and sharing of information the practice of journalism in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Kenya among other African states. Brown envelope journalism can sometimes be compared to ‘check book’ journalism but the latter is reversed in the sense that in brown envelope journalism, the sources pay the journalists so that their news items can be published, where as in ‘check book’ journalism , the media institutions usually pay their sources with an intention of getting information.
