Summary

LESSON 1
Introduction
By the end of this chapter, the learner should be able to:
1. Define the term behavioral science.
2. Differentiate between behavioral sciences and cognitive sciences.
3. Explain the difference between behavioral science and social science.
4. Describe the categories of behavioral sciences.
5. Describe the principles in studying behavior of individuals, groups and Society.

HBC 2302 Behavioural Sciences
Behavioral science examines individual characteristics and intelligence and how they influence behavior, while also exploring the impact of group, organizational and cultural factors. The Behavioural Science degree incorporates specialized knowledge developed in the disciplines of Psychology, Sociology, Political Science and Cultural Studies. It examines the manner in which people respond to the various contexts they inhabit and also the influence that people can have on those contexts.
As such it provides the nexus between traditional Psychology and Social Work. A Behavioural Scientist values human diversity and works collaboratively with communities to identify and advance the goals of the group and the individuals that comprise it. Behavioural Science promotes the concept of Wellbeing and aims to facilitate this at the individual, relational and collective levels. Often associated with the social sciences, behavioral science explores the activities and interactions among human beings. Your duties might include the investigation and analysis of human relationships through the behavioral aspects of such disciplines as biology, geography, law, psychiatry and political science. Though behavioral science is a broad field of study, you might choose to focus on a particular group of people, distinguished by race, age, nationality or gender. The term behavioral sciences encompasses all the disciplines that explore the activities of and interactions among organisms in the natural world. It involves the systematic analysis and investigation of human and other animal behaviour through controlled and naturalistic observation, and disciplined scientific experimentation. It attempts to accomplish legitimate, objective conclusions through rigorous formulations and observation.
Examples of behavioural sciences include social psychology, psychobiology, and sociology.
