b) Discuss the evolution of hospitality services
c) Explain the types of hospitality services
d) Discuss the importance of hospitality services
UNIT TASKS
Unit Task 1: Meaning of terms in Hospitality
? Meaning of hospitality
Hospitality can be defined in many ways. These include:
1. A cordial and generous treatment of guests.
2. Hospitality is known as the act of generously providing care and kindness to
whomever in need
3. Hospitality is the relationship between a guest and a host, or the act or
practice of being hospitable, that is, the reception and entertainment of guests,
visitors, or strangers, with liberality and goodwill. Hospitality frequently refers
to the hospitality industry jobs for hotels, restaurants, casinos, catering,
resorts, clubs and any other service position that deals with tourists.
? Meaning of Service
Service is described in the Oxford English Dictionary as "the action of serving,
helping, or benefiting; conduct tending to the welfare or advantage of another;
condition or employment of a public servant; friendly or professional assistance."
Furthermore, in Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, service is described
as "the occupation or function of serving others; employment as a servant;
contribution to the welfare of others.”
? Meaning of Hospitality Services
Hospitality Services are networks of people who exchange accommodation.
Usually, no money is involved. This gives travelers the chance to stay with locals
instead of in hotels or hostels, getting a better perspective on the culture they visit
and saving money.
Unit Task 2: Evolution of hospitality services
A 'hotel' or 'inn' is defined by the British law as 'the place where a bonafide
traveller can receive food and shelter provided he is in a position to pay for it and
is in a fit condition to be received'. Hence a hotel must provide food and lodging
to a traveller on payment and has, in turn, the right to refuse if the traveller is
drunk, disorderly, unkempt or is not in a position to pay for the services.
